New Heating & Cooling System at Parry Sound Town Store New for 2009: our town store will be heated and cooled with a Napoleon ductless heat pump. In the shoulder seasons this unit becomes a hybrid heat extractor, working down to -10 degrees C and delivering 300% more heat / kw than conventional electric baseboards. This unit will help cut our year round energy consumption and costs considerably.
Natural Gardens & Lawns Lawns and gardens at both store locations are pesticide & herbicide free. We’ve minimized the size of lawns that we have to cut and use an electric mower (using our green Bullfrog power) to mow our lawn at the Parry Sound store location.
Partner with the Eastern Georgian Bay Stewardship Council http://www.helpourfisheries.com/
White Squall has partnered with municipalities, provincial government, cottage associations, residents and other local business concerned with protecting the Georgian Bay Eco-system.
We continue to help with the establishment and maintenance of campsites including latrine boxes on outer islands near Parry Sound, one of many specific projects that White Squall was been involved with for years in partnership with the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Association (GLSKA) http://glska.freehostia.com/
Low Impact Camping Practices Include:
- Packing out all garbage /compost
- Use of cook stoves for all meals
- A tried & tested system of handling human waste on Georgian Bay's rocky islands
- Using fires only in an emergency to conserve the precious wood on the outer islands. We encourage our kayak renters to do the same and abide by the voluntary fire ban while camping on Georgian Bay.
A comment from trip participant on Ecology of the Bay Trip : "The minimum impact camping approach as practiced by White Squall was particularly impressive. Twelve of us left no trace. We weren’t pretending either – the rules & practice made it natural. Very well done."
