Franklin Wolves & Red Rock Ice Pans
Just got back from a ski trip to Franklin Island with my friend Thom. On a star-filled night we heard howling behind camp, followed by a lot of yipping (I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Thom) Not having Rick Mercer around with a helicopter – we just listened.  Two days later, I was exploring a back lake on Franklin and discovered a fresh deer kill, down to the bone and skin – with ravens on cleanup duty. We’re guessing the wolves crossed on the ice to get the deer – and life goes on.

Skiing an hour out to Red Rock Lighthouse was one of those rare moments you sometimes get in life. The ice was about 20 inches thick – but as we approached the light –we found a sea of broken pack ice for as far as the eye could see. It was frozen solid and we could hop from pan to pan like a couple of Newfoundland sealers. Imagining being the light-keeper out there in early and late winter –we decided visiting it for an hour was plenty enough excitement for us land lubbers.

Paddling Centre Opens 7 Days a Week Starting April 1 (but not good Friday :)
Lots of new boats and gear to show off, so hope you can come and visit. Ice should be gone by third week of April. If not, I’ll get my chainsaw out andmake it disappear the old fashioned Carling Township way. If you’re at a show and fall in love with a shiny canoe or kayak, please give us a thought before you go head over heels... We may well have it here – can match price, store it and deliver it within an hour for free and best of all- give you White Squall service – long after the sale. Please check out our new, used and demo inventory online.

Wilderness First Aid Openings

There are a few spots left – taught by industry leaders Wilderness Medical
Associates

  • Wilderness First Aid – April 18.19
  • Advanced Wilderness First Aid – April 25 -28
  • Bridge to Wilderness First Responder – April 30 – May 3
(for the first two, there are no pre-requisites - amazing courses going well
beyond standard first aid. Trains you to problem solve in a wilderness
setting – a solid addition to anyone’s resume, which is pretty important
these days!)

Sharon MacKinnon Outer Islands Painting - Art Retreat Kayak Trip on Georgian BayTa Da! New Trip to Announce - Island Art Retreat Sept. 1-4
We are really excited to welcome back Squall Alumni Sharon MacKinnon -artist, teacher and outdoor adventurer whose goal is to kayak all theworld’s oceans. Amazingly, only the Antarctic remains. Sharon will lead “Island Art Retreat,” a lodge-based kayaking trip on spectacular Georgian Bay. This soft-adventure expedition features home-cooked meals and
accommodation in a traditional Georgian Bay island fishing camp (Diamond Key Lodge) with daily paddling trips out to the islands where you'll learn to sketch and paint. I got a D in my one and only highschool art class but Sharon said that even I would be welcome! To learn more about her, check out her website. We’re pretty lucky to have her join us and hope you can sign on to this September trip – where the water is warm and the islands are quiet! Read more...
