Paddlers and Hooters - Mid-April Update
Cole Lake at the White Squall Paddling Centre almost ice free - get ready to paddle
The Mighty Ice Sheets of Cole Lake are almost gone!!! Time to Paddle!
Hello Paddlers and Hooters

In this edition:

  • Sandhill Cranes & Flycatchers
  • Mighty Ice Sheets of Cole Lake are melting - Open Water!
  • Stand Up Paddle Boards are here!
  • James Bond wear for paddlers!!
  • Help our local Bankrupt Foodbank when attending our Paddle Party / Open House May 16/17.

Two Sandhill Cranes hooted above our heads during tea break today (they don't really hoot - more like a squawk, but I needed them to match my subject line) - did you know they mate for life and have a wingspan of 7 feet. Pretty sure those two facts are unrelated - so there ya go. And the Flycatchers are back - so we're just waiting for the woodcocks and their aerial dance then spring will be complete.

The mighty ice sheets of Cole Lake (which I've been skiing upon for the last several weeks) have given way - and there is now open water off our dock. Not a lot mind you, but enough to put a boat in and go for a paddle.

Stand Up Paddle Boards have arrived, so far they've been sitting down most of the time (kind of like some staff I know...just kidding) - we're not sure how to get them to stand up - does anyone know? I think I got ripped off. They are clearly different than kayaks and canoes - but we'll learn 'em. And boy, the paddles - they are the longest suckers I"ve ever seen.

We've got a ton of paddling gear now in stock - including the very same stuff that Daniel Craig wore in Quantum Solace (I ain't kidding). It's called REED Aquatherm - basically fuzzy rubber, but very tight-warm and British - sort of like custard. If you want me or Benji to model some if it when you come, just ask. Some other totally cool stuff includes drysuits, paddling tops, booties, hoodies, and handies. Handies are...well you figure it out. I am very happy about a new helmet from ProTec which reverses so the lid can be in the back or front - just like a ball cap. Best thing is that it's comfortable - and I've tried a bzillion to find one that fits, this one seems to. And for the roof rackers in the crowd - the better mousetrap this year is the vertical kayak cradles from both Yakima and Thule which...wait for it....fold down! So no longer do you have to have these dorky cradles disturbing the air flow around your 20 year old Toyota. Now you can go like stink and not burn so much carbon.

Our local food bank is bankrupt - foodwise. So though our paddle party on the may long weekend is entirely free, we're hoping you can bring a food item to help them out. We've got a lot of people coming to help out, so it's gonna be fun - bring the whole fam damily.

Bye for now - tim
