Tim's Tips February '09

Tim Dyer Tim’s Tips

In this issue:

  • Little Red Worms;
  • "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortensem & David Oliver Relin ;
  • "A Short HIstory of Nearly Everything" By Bill Bryson.

1. Little Red Worms – if you see millions of these little squigglies doing backflips in your camp water, don’t panic. They’re the larvae of midge flies and quite harmless.  We encountered them in January on our backcountry ski trip north of the Sault on a swampy lake.  At first we hesitated to scoop up our coffee water from the ice hole full of these little buggers but a good boil does the trick and adds a nice bit of colour to your pasta.

2. “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortensem & David Oliver Relin,   if you haven’t read it, do yourself a favour.  It’s one of those books that is both heartening, sobering – and served to give me a sound kick in the rear. Visit http://www.threecupsoftea.com/

Another dandy is “A Short History of Nearly Everything”  by Bill Bryson.  A good friend gave it to me and it’s one of those books I’ll go back to for years to come.  It would be a fine gift to any highschool student who wants to really understand how the world works. http://www.randomhouse.com/features/billbryson/bb_title/display.pperl?isbn=9780767908184
