Tim's Tips to beat the heat |
Tim's Tip #1 I think Lawrence of Arabia cooked this on up - On hot days out on a Bay camp, take an absorbent pack towel to drape over your food bags. Keep it well soaked, in the shade, wind and off the ground (sticks work well) Evaporation keeps everything from cooking. One of our guides, capt'n jack - invented a continuous drip (I think he also mumbled that I resembled his invention) but anyway.... he used a collapsible water container and had it leak onto the towel while he went for a paddle. Returning later the food containers were as cool as a cucumber - even on a hot july day. Pretty cool trick huh? More tips: cotton doesn't kill,
Tip #2 Cotton doesn't kill - so throw out those old boy scout textbooks and listen to tim. When she's stinkin' hot out - a cotton T shirt is the perfect garment to stop you from cooking (ie: heat stroke). It absorbs a ton of water, so keep yourself wet - bilge pump fights work best! Some of our guides wear a thin merino wool top and put a cotton tee over that. You stay more regular - oops, no that's another tip - more regulated - there, that's the word I wanted. Instead of the cold shock of wet cotton in the wind, you have the cozy feel of the merino, then the cooling effect of the wet tee - and when you get out on shore - if it's windy and cool, take the tee off and the underlayer will keep you comfortable. Just about the perfect clothing system for summer on the Bay. So don't throw out that drawer full of flea bitten high school T shirts - they are totally awesome cool paddling gear and quite retro as well don't ya know. Hokay - thanks for listening - be cool, stay in sea kayak school....t {rokintensedebate}
